Fans Are Convinced That Nathan Fielder And Elizabeth Holmes Have Romantic Tension In You Can See Everything

Warning: This post contains spoilers for You Can See Everything

Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s new documentary You Can See Everything has made waves since its release in theaters earlier this month. The film, which debuted on October 16 domestically, had a strong start to its box office run, and was boosted even further by a second weekend that was 20% higher in earnings than the first.

You Can See Everything follows Elizabeth Holmes, a controversial figure in the world of medicine and technology, as she prepares to begin her twelve-year prison sentence. Holmes gave Fielder, Oppenheim, and A24 the chance to document her last three weeks as a free woman before turning herself over to the authorities. The film explores this crucial period in Holmes’ life, and also dives deep into her relationship with her husband, Billy Evans.

You Can See Everything is far from a traditional documentary, however. The film takes a turn roughly halfway through as Holmes leaves to go to prison; actress Amanda Seyfried, who played her in the 2022 Hulu series The Dropout, comes in her place, not only to star in reenactments of key events not captured on camera, but to give her own opinions as well.

At one moment late on in the film, Fielder recounts his interaction with Holmes during a visit to her prison in Texas. Interestingly, Seyfried questions Fielder’s version of events, even going on to ask him if he was holding back from sharing certain details that may make Holmes look back in an attempt to remain loyal to her. Fielder denies this, but Seyfried wasn’t the only one who sensed a connection between the film’s co-director and main subject.

In fact, many viewers have since shared their theory that Fielder and Holmes were carrying romantic tension throughout the film. Although unsubstantiated, there’s no denying that the two got along quite well throughout the filming (much more so than Fielder and Evans, for example).

Elizabeth Holmes And Nathan Fielder Have A Strong Bond In You Can See Everything

In line with much of Fielder’s previous work, You Can See Everything is cut with severe awkwardness in its opening moments. Audiences get a good look at Holmes and her family’s living situation, and the presence of A24’s camera crew as well. Fielder is present for many of these moments as well, speaking with Holmes and her husband as they go about their daily lives.

Fielder and Evans’ interactions are almost always filled with tension and awkwardness, even at the very beginning of the film. Fielder, for example, spends roughly ten seconds choosing the right piece of a pink pineapple offered by Evans. Evans attempts to undercut the awkwardness by quipping, “You’ve got to choose the right one.”

Holmes and Fielder’s interactions are remarkably different from that, however. Instead, Fielder and Holmes have an almost instant chemistry, getting along well with one another. To her credit, Holmes is incredibly open with Fielder, telling him that he’s welcome to stay in the family’s guest bedroom rather than sleeping at a nearby hotel.

This connection comes even as Fielder is incredibly skeptical of Holmes. For starters, he questions why Holmes would invite him into her home, and why she would want an entire crew of people following her every move during her final days of freedom for over a decade. Fielder also questions why Holmes would choose him of all people to make a documentary about her, and wonders if she picked him because of his relative lack of scientific background (meaning that he can’t challenge her claims regarding Theranos’ products).

Fielder confronts Holmes about this, which leads to an honest conversation between the two. Holmes understands Fielder’s concerns but, at the same time, doesn’t give a firm answer as to why she chose Fielder, or if his comedic background (instead of a science-oriented one) played a part.

Still, despite these concerns, Fielder and Holmes get along very well. The two eat breakfast together and even watch TV (while joined by Billy as well). It’s clear that Holmes and Fielder both disarm each other, in a sense, causing one another to feel more at ease during their conversations. This arguably affects Fielder more than Holmes, however, as the former arguably becomes a subject in his own documentary as the film goes on, in large part because of his proximity to the story’s central character.

Fielder And Holmes’ On-Screen Goodbye Has Prompted Theories About A Potential Romantic Connection

The theories regarding a deeper connection between the two are mostly rooted in the final moments they spend with one another before Holmes goes to prison. For starters, Fielder gets Holmes a parting gift and a card, wishing her well (the gift itself is a gag — a pair of sunglasses and hair dye in case she wants to “flee the country”).

Yet, as the two step outside and head towards the car, they stand very close to one another to say goodbye. Elizabeth Holmes tells Fielder that he’s “got this,” which prompts a typically awkward reaction from him. For a moment, it seemed as if Holmes and Fielder were about to embrace for a hug before she departed, but the two ended up standing there awkwardly staring at each other instead.

Undercutting the theories of romantic tension in You Can See Everything are the final moments of the film. Fielder comments that Holmes seems to genuinely love her husband, and describes it as “true love.” In fact, Holmes and Evans use the same unique wording to describe their bond, saying that they both “build monuments of love” to one another.

Yet, despite that, Fielder and Holmes still haven’t ceased contact since filming for You Can See Everything concluded. Although it’s very difficult for Holmes to talk at length on the phone while incarcerated, Fielder recently revealed that the former head of Theranos contacted him earlier this month; he didn’t reveal the full details of their conversation, however.
