In the Texas heat, getting dressed starts to feel less about style and more about survival. I want to feel put-together, but most days I’m simply trying not to overheat. Anything structured feels suffocating, layering is out the window, and the risk of sweat makes even my favorite pieces untouchable. The search for hot-weather outfits that are both breathable and interesting has become a daily struggle.

When it’s this hot, your summer wardrobe has to do more with less. And while “just throw on a sundress” is nice in theory, I wanted actionable advice from the best of the best. Below, celebrity stylists Coco Schiffer and Emily Lafitte share their tips for putting together hot weather outfits that feel intentional and effortless, even when the forecast is working against you. From flowy silhouettes to small bags and scrunchies, their secrets are smart, chic, and already sitting in your closet.

How to Dress in the Heat: 5 Hot Weather Outfit Tips from Celebrity Stylists

    1. ABC: Accessorize Basic Clothes

Hot weather outfits don’t have to be complicated. In fact, they shouldn’t be. Both stylists champion a simplified, pared-back wardrobe for summer—but with standout accessories to elevate the look.

“Almost so minimal you feel boring,” Coco says. “But that’s where the fun comes in—add an oversized necklace, a cool bag, statement earrings, sandals.” That’s where an outfit really gets its personality.

    2. Go With the Flow

No one wants to feel constricted in the heat. The looser the silhouette, the cooler you’ll stay–and the more polished you’ll look. Think fluted skirts, breezy maxi dresses, and wide-leg trousers. “No one wants to be in a skin-tight anything when it’s a million degrees outside,” says Coco.

    3. Live in Linen

Linen is the undisputed hero of hot weather outfits. Both stylists called it a non-negotiable, with Emily swearing by her collection of linen drawstring pants in neutral tones and stripes: “Rotating through these saves me in the morning,” she says.

For nighttime, she opts for tailored linen trousers with halter tops. Coco agrees—but stresses that not all linen is created equal. “Focus on quality linen that will last you season over season and doesn’t wrinkle terribly. You know it’s not good linen when you can’t get the creases out.”

    4. Pony Up

There’s nothing worse than hair clinging to your neck. Emily’s solution? Scrunchies—specifically silk ones from Bahay Kubo. “Any time my hair is up, it’s in a scrunchie,” she says. “Perfect for either a slick back or a messy bun.” It’s a subtle detail, but one that brings both function and style to your look.

    5. Itty-Bitty Bags

Even a heavy purse feels heavier in 90-degree heat. “I gravitate toward my smallest purses in the summertime,” Emily says. Her go-tos? The Row’s ’90s Bag and a mini raffia top-handle from Mango. Coco recommends adding personality here—a bright bag or playful texture adds interest to even the most minimal look.
